| ello! I hope you’ve come to this website because you – like me – think that hand-lettered calligraphy brings romance, beauty, and nostalgia to our overly busy and computerized lives. It adds meaning and depth to the simple lines that you are mailing out to loved ones, or perhaps, are hanging on your wall. But who has patience to sharpen the pen, dip it into ink, and let it dance over a handmade paper. Well, I do.
My love for calligraphy started in high school in my native Estonia, a small country in Europe. I studied calligraphy for three years in a school founded by Villu Toots in Tallinn. I spent years doing calligraphy professionally, including some large lettering and stage decorating for cultural events such as local song festivals.
In 1995 my life as I knew it was turned around. I met an American guy working in Estonia, fell in love, and got married soon after. I moved half way across the planet to New Orleans. After the initial shock and some odd jobs – including one as a calligrapher for a religious retreat house - I found that my lettering skills could be put to a good use here helping local brides.
Today, twenty years after my first strokes in calligraphy, I have a loyal clientele from New York to California, but mostly in my adopted hometown New Orleans. I work with the most reputable stationery shops here. In some families, two or three daughters have used my services. During the last six years I have designed almost 100 invitations and addressed countless envelopes. I am a member of New Orleans Lettering Arts Association and New Orleans Wedding Professionals Guild. I was voted calligrapher of the year for 2004 by the latter. I love challenges, and no project is too small for me.
I still do calligraphy the old fashioned way. I never use fountain pens or markers. I dip my pen into an inkwell every two or three words to make it flow. I take the time to mix my own inks. And I try to make each client feel as if he or she is my only one. I look forward to bring a touch of this old world refinement to the event of your lifetime. |
